Opening Your Dallas Garage Door During Power Outage
When wind storms cause big power outages, we get a number of call about doors not opening. While you may not want to go outside, you certainly don’t want to be locked in. Here’s how to open your garage door manually.
If you’ve pulled on the emergency release handle before and have seen how easy it is to do, there is no great mystery. But it can be a little daunting for first timers.
While using the emergency release handle is fairly simple, there are some important safety considerations to keep in mind:
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
- If your door is already open, do not pull on the emergency release handle. That may allow the door to fall unexpectedly if it is not balanced with proper spring tension, or if your springs are worn or broken. Use the emergency release handle only if the door is closed.
- Never use the emergency release handle unless the doorway is clear of persons and obstructions.
- Never use the handle to pull the door open or closed. If the rope knot should become untied, you could fall.
With those precautions understood, the steps to open and close the door manually are fairly straightforward. With the door closed, pull the release handle straight down to disengage the drive trolley. The trolley on Raynor garage doors has a lockout feature that will prevent it from reconnecting automatically. The door can then be raised and lowered manually as often as necessary.Take care that your fingers are away from the section seams and other moving parts.
To re-engage the trolley, pull the handle down and back (toward the opener). It will reconnect itself again on the next Up or Down operation of the door, either manually or by using the door control or remote control when power is restored. You don’t have to worry about the door’s position when reconnecting the trolley. As long as the trolley is at least 4 inches away from the opener, it will reset itself automatically for opening and closing limits.

Consider replacing your opener that includes a battery backup feature.
When the power comes back on remember to reconnect the opener and make sure the door is unlocked. Trying to open a locked door has damaged many a garage door opener.
